Yesterday, I was in the OR all day, so I knew I needed a big breakfast to keep me going.
Even though it’s freezing and snowing in Minnesota, I have been LOVING smoothies lately.
Smoothies have tons of benefits. They are:
- Easy to make
- Packed full of tons of fruits and veggies
- Energizing
- Easy to take on the go
- Easy to store for later
One of my favorite smoothies is a green smoothie with kale, spinach, bananas, apple juice, lemon, and ginger. I pick this up from my favorite local co-op on the weekends 🙂
In the past few weeks of having smoothies nearly every day, I have come up with several recipes that I think would be perfect for healthcare providers. I will share them with you here, starting with one of my favorites:
The Surgeon’s Smoothie.
This smoothie is ultra filling, so you won’t go hungry in the OR. The kale and blueberries provide tons of antioxidants and minerals, while the chia seeds provide healthy omega-3’s, the avocado and coconut oil provide healthy fats, and the dates make it sweet and energizing.
I hope you try this one out! Stay tuned for the “medical student smoothie” and the “post-call smoothie” 🙂
Do you like smoothies in the winter? Or only in the summer?
What’s your favorite smoothie combo?

I love smoothies! In the winter I always add some warming spices like cinnamon, ginger, cardamom, and less frozen stuff; sometimes I add beets or cabbage this time of year (especially if I’m looking a little pale)–red foods and warming foods are good in winter according to auyrveda 😉 And smoothies are easy to bring to class, and a good way to get lots of fruits and veggies in first thing! Thanks!

I always add fresh spinach into my smoothies because you can’t taste it 😀 We don’t get a lot of kale in Hungary and Finland so I can’t boost the nutritious power of my smoothies that way, unfortunately! But I love adding avocado for the same effect as a banana… makes the smoothie so creamy!
Looking forward to the medical student smoothie! 😀

Spinach is so great! Recently I’ve been using a mix of spinach, kale, and chard!

My favorite smoothie is one I’ve been making for several years. I don’t want a lot of added sugar in my diet, and for some tastes, this one may run a bit tart, but I love it. Some people like to add sugar or honey to this, but I honestly don’t think it needs it.
6 ounces (3/4 cup) non-fat plain greek yogurt (I use the Trader Joe brand)
2 ounces (roughly quarter cup) frozen raspberries (you can use other berries, but I love the raspberries best)
1/2 sliced banana frozen (I keep frozen sliced banana in zip-lock bags in the freezer)
1 tablespoon orange juice (or a slice of fresh orange)
Put it all into a blender, food processor, or a measuring cup and use a stick blender. Blend till smooth (you will still have raspberry seeds)
Eat with a spoon! This is about the consistency of soft serve ice cream. Seriously, I feel like I’m eating ice cream or a really thick milkshake for breakfast! You could do without the OJ, but I like the little bit of citrus tang it gives, The juice give a little more smooth consistency to the final product

Hi Andrea – It may just be due to sleep deprivation and I cannot see, but what liquid is used in this recipe?
Thank you,
David (all the way from Ireland)
