My first Monday of freedom has arrived!! My Cardiology month ended on Friday and now I have one entire week of vacation and I am just thrilled.
The last week of Cards was actually not bad at all, so I shouldn’t complain. I did work long hours (6 am-9 pm one night and 6-8:30 another night) but my team of interns, senior residents, my fellow, and my consultant were all fantastic which made it so much better. My consultant taught SO much and for the first time ever I kind of enjoyed talking about murmurs and jugular venous wave forms.
Here are some really great illustrated murmurs if you’re interested:[youtube.com=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MJg257pyt4I&list=PLD9731E70DD5BB801&index=4]
And another nice video for JVD:[youtube.com=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=geGwx08aVP4]
Someone on instagram asked me why I dislike Cardiology so much and it made me feel really guilty about complaining about the rotation. I think it was just a perfect storm of being the end of the year when I am tired, cards in general is my least favorite subject and I just don’t enjoy the physiology, SO much of it has no application with ophthalmology, and my consultant for the first week wasn’t interested in teaching at all which made it hard.
My co-resident Eddie loved all the cardiac physiology so it was fun to watch him get all into some of the teaching sessions. But I just have zero interest in it. I don’t like all the electrical stuff, I don’t like conceptualizing all the squeezing and valves opening and shutting… I just hate it!! Sorry guys!
The other thing I hated was how sick the patients were. These were by far the sickest patients I have cared for outside of the ICU and some of them did not do well. I had several patients die this month and that made it really hard for me.
So with all that said, I’m glad it’s over 🙂
Friday night was the senior banquet for all the graduating senior residents, so we all went out to the bars for an after party. There were probably 50+ doctors at this little bar in downtown Rochester and it was so fun!!! I love all the people I work with and I am going to miss all my seniors terribly!
On Saturday, I slept in (glorious!) and relaxed around the house with Kyle for a while. We ran some errands and did some things around the house. While we were out and about we stopped at Chipotle for lunch which was delicious as always. How is it so good?
Everyone on instagram told me I should try the sofritas next time, so I will definitely give those a try. Have you tried them?
Later in the afternoon, I did a quick 3 miles on the treadmill and a 10 min HIIT from Two Bad Bodies.
It was the first HIIT workout I have tried with weights and holy moly I was sweating!!! It’s crazy how only 10 minutes can really give you such a great workout.
Sunday started with sleeping in again (oh the joy of vacation!!). Kodiak Cakes sent me some of their pancake mix to try and Kyle fell in love with the buttermilk and honey one, so at his request we’ve been having pancakes a lot lately 🙂
I made a bunch for him and made a small one for myself too! I had already made my yogurt and berries when we decided on pancakes, otherwise I would have been having a stack alongside Kyle’s.
After breakfast I did some more cooking and then spent a few hours doing chores around the house. My laundry PILES up when I’m on a busy rotation so this past month has been pretty bad…
Later on in the afternoon, Kyle and I decided to take my new bike for a spin!!
We rode for a little over an hour and even though it was cloudy, being out in the fresh air and breeze felt so refreshing. After being cooped up in the hospital for most of the month, I need to take some deep breaths outdoors. I am seriously so happy I finally got a bike and I know I will ride it a ton this summer 🙂 I used my running app to track us in case we got lost!
Counting my bike ride yesterday, I managed to workout 5 days last week. Two of those days were only 10 minute workouts, so I’m hoping that now I have the week off, I can up my workout game a bit 🙂
We ended the night with ice cream- you have to get ice cream to celebrate the end of Cardiology right?
Hope your Monday is off to a great start!
