I skimmed 2 interesting studies on ScienceDaily this morning and I thought I would share them with you!
In the first study, researchers have been able to link a certain protein with heterochromatin, a compact form of DNA that deteriorates as we age. The particular protein they studied works to stabilize heterochromatin, and therefore combat aging. In a disease called Werners syndrome, the WRN protein is mutated which leads to DNA damage and premature aging. Patients get premature graying and loss of hair, cataracts, skin breakdown, and other ailments typically associated with aging.
The second study is about caloric restriction. CR is basically the only diet intervention that seems to increase longevity, which really bums me out because well… who wants to eat less?
From the article: “We are able to show that caloric restriction slows down aging by preventing an enzyme, peroxiredoxin, from being inactivated. This enzyme is also extremely important in counteracting damage to our genetic material,” says Mikael Molin of the Department of Cell and Molecular Biology.
I love all the research on longevity because personally, I want to live forever. I just keep thinking of all the cool stuff in the future I want to see!! One of my co-residents Darin also wants to live forever, but when we’ve discussed this with other friends, many disagree. They have no interest in living extra long, which is so weird to me!
Do you want to live forever? I’m aiming for 120 years at least!
Yesterday was my day off, so I did all my normal day off stuff. I grocery shopped, I cooked, I worked out, and I hung out with Kyle 🙂
Before he left for work, Kyle made me a nice grocery list. Doesn’t he have the best handwriting?
I started the day with a smoothie made with banana, spinach, protein powder, and some Silk soy milk. Easy to drink in the car on the go!
I didn’t cook too many specific “recipes” this time because most of the TIU Bikini Series recipes didn’t look super yummy to me this week.
I did make a gigantic fruit salad with apples, oranges, blueberries, blackberries, pineapple, and banana.
I also made a massive batch of chicken fajitas. I just start with onions, red, and green peppers:
And then add a bunch of sliced chicken and a packet of taco or fajita seasoning.
Kyle loves it on tortillas and I like it with tortillas or with lettuce for a salad!
I tried to make bags with food for the rest of the week so I can just grab one and put it in my lunch box. In each bag we have breakfast bars/cookies, chicken fajita salad with a tortilla and fruit salad for lunch, and celery and PB for a snack.
For lunch I had some chicken with pineapple salsa, spinach, avocado, and
a ton of some tortilla chips.
Later in the day, I decided to try another HIIT workout (2 in a row!!) I picked this Fitness Blender 48 minute HIIT workout.[youtube.com=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s3zAG4zvVpc]
Here is the structure of the workout:
Some of the exercises were brutal and some were pretty easy, so it was a good mix. At the end I was sweaty and tired and today I am sore, so I think that equals success!!
For dinner I made a simple tortilla with turkey, homemade basil mayonnaise (yum!) and more tortilla chips. Why are they so good??
Now it’s back to work for me! Have a great day everybody!!
