It’s the first Friday Favorites on the new blog! As a medical school blog and residency blog, I want to focus on my experiences in school, living a healthy life, but it is fun to share some favorite from the week!
And… don’t forget to enter the $150 Athleta giveaway!!
Before I start listing all the things I’ve been loving lately, I want to tell you that I ran outside for the first time this winter! Yesterday wasn’t all that cold (around 20 F) and I had to go downtown to pick something up, so I decided to run there! I paused my GPS when I got downtown and then forgot to turn it back on right away, so it says 3.7 but it was 4 miles. Not a long run, but it felt so good to be outside! I wore fleece running tights (Target) a thermal undershirt (Costco) and a fleece zip-up and I felt fine! Gloves and a warm hat made all the difference 🙂
My time was pretty slow from stopping at red lights and running through some slippery, snowy patches, but overall it felt pretty great!
After my run I cleaned up, grabbed some coffee and headed to work for the evening.
And now for some favorites:
I follow these guys on instagram and all their smoothies look SOOOO good! They are doing a 30 day green smoothie challenge, so I signed up for the email online. Each week you get 5 new smoothie recipes to try and they all sound so delicious!
Normally I don’t think I need to follow recipes when it comes to smoothies, because I just throw things into a blender, but these recipes have really encouraged me to branch out and try combinations I wouldn’t have thought of before.
Last week I tried a “strawberry daiquiri” smoothie made with spinach, strawberries, and grapefruit and it really was reminiscent of a daiquiri! I never would have put grapefruit into a smoothie before this website 🙂
Check it out!
- This song:
I just love it!
- My flower arrangements:
I told you guys that I tried to make my own flower arrangements to save some money, since all the ones I liked online were so pricey!! Well here is the result:
I hot-glued little pieces of moss on the bottom to make it look more real, and I think it turned out really well!
I ended up making 5 arrangements for $170. I had to buy all the flowers, the vases to put them in, foam, a hot glue gun, hot glue sticks, floral tape- basically everything.
Here’s an arrangement from Kohl’s that I think looks similar, and is $300! Crazy right??
- These popsicles:
I got them to Kyle since he was so sick, and I’ve been eating them every day! Man they are so good!! Does anyone else like popsicles when they are sick? I used to get the orange/cherry/grape ones when I was a kid. These strawberry ones might have those beat.
- This article:
I’ve been saying that salt isn’t the culprit behind heart disease FOREVER! Now, I know that this is a really complicated topic. But, here is my basic stance: if you have functioning kidneys, salt should not affect your blood pressure over the long run. Maybe if you eat an entire bag of salty pretzels your blood pressure will be up (we’re talking 1-5 mm hg) for a few hours, but after that your kidneys will do what they are designed to do and bring you back to equilibrium. There are so many confounding variables in play when you’re talking about sodium in the diet. Here are the big ones:
- Real food doesn’t have high sodium. There are so few natural food items that have sodium. I think swiss chard actually has high sodium but basically all fruits, veggies, and natural protein have no sodium.
- Therefore- if you eat a diet made of whole, natural, unprocessed foods- you will never have a sodium problem. EVEN if you put salt on all your food.
- BUT: if you eat processed food, you will be getting tons of sodium. People blame the sodium but I think we have to look at all the other factors involved with eating processed food. If you are eating all processed food and therefore a high sodium diet, you are more likely to be overweight, you are more likely to have nutrient deficiencies, you are more likely to come from a lower socioeconomic background (not always the case but definitely increased association).
- So I think there are a multitude of factors at play here and simply saying to eat low sodium foods (I think twizzlers are a low sodium food) is not the answer.
And so ends another Friday Favorites. I will try to incorporate more beauty products next week because I know you guys like that 🙂
