Yesterday was Kyle and my first marriage class!! We are taking classes through our church in preparation for our wedding on May 4th! Before the class, the instructor had us each individually fill out a long questionnaire about our relationship. There were about 200 questions I think, mostly in the form of a statement with answer choices being “I strongly agree”, “I agree”, “I disagree”, or “I strongly disagree”. We were pretty excited to get started!
For our first session (there are 3 total I think) we went over some big points of the inventory- communication, stress, and the general dynamics of our relationship.
I think this is hilarious- we almost strongly agree on everything except finances… uh oh.
The counselor said that there are a few “red flag questions” he always pays attention to, and that we answered those well. Those included “My partner makes comments that put me down” (we both strongly disagreed) and “I feel my partner is dominant, controlling, or interested in managing my life” (we both strongly disagreed).
Some things we were super different on were assertiveness.
I am very assertive. If something bugs me, I just say it right away. I feel like it’s better than letting it build up into something bigger. I’m also not afraid to directly ask for what I need in a relationship. I tell Kyle I need him to run to the door and hug me every time I come home 🙂
Kyle on the other hand, is not assertive at all. He never tells me what I do that annoys him. And I’m the most annoying person ever!! So I know there has to be something. I need to encourage him to tell me when something bothers him. Also, I need to be careful that my assertiveness doesn’t come off as nagging.
We both scored really low on the partner dominance scale which I think is good. I feel like our relationship is really equal and neither of us is dominant over the other. We’re a team!!!
Other than marriage class, I made some healthy meals and had a great workout yesterday! On a whim, I bought these flax seed packets from Walmart the other day.
I hate taking fish oil and sometimes worry I don’t get enough omega 3s in my diet. So I thought I would give these a try!!
I worried they would make my oatmeal or smoothies taste fishy, but I was so wrong! I stirred a packet into my oatmeal and couldn’t taste them at all!!
MMMmmmmm chocolate blueberry egg white oatmeal.
Yesterday was back and biceps day at the gym. I haven’t been following a set plan, but I’ve been trying to get in at least 4 days of weight lifting a week (and I’ve been going strong for 2 weeks!). Some days I dig into old workouts I’ve done, and other days I just pick a Jamie Eason workout (her’s are my favorite and you can find them here.)
So I did:
- 20 min warm-up on stairs
- Wide grip pull-ups
- Seated cable rows
- Barbell bent-over rows
- Lat pull-downs
- One arm dumbbell rows
- Back hyperextensions
- 20 min sprints on treadmill
With all the travel I’ve been doing lately, my water intake has taken a big hit. I never drink enough water and I know it’s a bad bad thing. So while I’m home for the next week, I’m making an effort to get in a gallon a day. Yesterday I hit a little over 3 L but not quite a gallon (4 L). It’s just so hard when you’re not used to it!!!! When I got home I made a simple dinner of chicken, salad, and sweet potato. And before bed I had greek yogurt with some protein powder mixed in and a pumpkin muffin crumbled on top. I closed my eyes and pretended it was ice cream. Not quite as good… Questions: Did you do a marriage class? Are you following a strength training plan at the moment? Let’s be workout buddies!!
