These past few mornings I’ve woken up pretty darn hungry with nothing good to eat. I wake up early (anywhere between 4 and 5:30) each morning so I don’t want to eat my big breakfast right away. I try to hold off on the big breakfast until right before I leave for clinic; that way, I’m not starving by 9 in the morning.
So, what to eat first thing in the morning? Here are the things I’ve tried so far:
- Piece of Ezekiel bread and peanut butter
- Handful of almonds
- Small yogurt
- Protein bar (homemade or store bought)
- Fruit- A bowl of melon, cherries, a banana…
If I’m going to work out in the morning, I try to get a little protein in my snack before I hit the gym. Occasionally I will workout on an empty stomach, but I usually wake up hungry. No one likes to workout when their stomach is growling!
Yesterday I happened to have a Chobani Flip greek yogurt calling my name for an early morning snack. Those things are sooo #$*^%ing delicious I can’t control myself. If you haven’t tried one, go out and buy either the coconut or the key-lime one. You will thank me later. Or you might be mad at me because you might eat 3 of them in one day like I do.
My yogurt fueled some early morning blogging and school work but by 8:30 I was hungry again for real breakfast. This month I get to stay at home pretty much every day which is glorious. I can work out at my leisure, stay in pajamas all day, and make eggs for breakfast. Fourth year of medical school is the bomb.com
I made 2 egg whites, 1 whole egg, a sprinkle of cheese, green onions, and tomato, all on top of 1/2 a flat out wrap.
Un-pictured was a huge bowl of watermelon.
Then, it was time to go for a run! I contemplated doing a workout indoors but it was so incredibly beautiful outside yesterday, I had to run. I’m happy to get sun on my arms and legs- gotta get that Vitamin D!!!- But I try to protect my face from the sun with hats when I run, and a sunscreen moisturizer each day. Maybe this will put off my need for Botox by a few years 😉
I seriously don’t understand how I can run away from my house until my phone says 2 miles, then run a little further and turn around, and the run back is less than 2 miles…. How does that make sense? So I’m standing by my guns that this run was 4 miles.
My body is prone to injury. Running long distances always hurts my knees, my ankle was bothering me a few weeks ago (all better now), my back hurts during yoga… I just hurt all over! But lately I’ve been more stiff and sore than usual, especially in my knees. So, I think it’s time for new running shoes. I had been running in non-supportive cross-training type shoes for a few weeks before my ankle started to hurt, so I’m wondering if that was a contributing factor. After my run yesterday, I said goodbye to my running tennis shoes. Today I’m headed out to get new ones!
How many miles do you put in before you get a new pair of running shoes?
I spent some of the afternoon working outside in the yard and washing my car. Lunch was a bowl of seitan with veggies and mexican spices, 1/2 a flat out wrap with some melted cheese like a mini quesadilla, and another huge bowl of watermelon. Mmmmmm.
Then I HAD to get some work done so I went to Starbucks. I don’t know why but I’ve been SO tired this week. My iced coffee helped perk me up a bit..
Whole Foods is right next to Starbucks so I roamed over for a salad for dinner. I don’t think the Whole Foods hot-bar is all that great… but I do like all their salad toppings. My favorite part of getting a salad from Whole Foods is that I can try little bits of foods I wouldn’t want to eat a whole serving of- like mac and cheese and indian food. I really do love their mac and cheese, but am perfectly content with only a few bites. It’s the perfect accompaniment to a fresh salad 🙂
Dessert was a bar of chocolate disguised as something healthy:
It’s probably exactly the same as a crunch bar, but since they call it a probiotic bar, it’s healthy and 8 times more expensive 😉
And that’s the day in a nutshell!
What do you eat in the morning? Do you workout on an empty stomach?
Any recommendations for new running shoes?
