Guess who’s here? Kyle! He will be working part-time in southern Indiana for the rest of the month to transition out of working there, and moving to Indianapolis. I’ve mentioned before that we’ve been in a long distance relationship for almost 6 years, so living in the same house is going to be a big change!

Thanks for all the support yesterday about my silly ankle! It feels fine today, even after my spinning yesterday, so I think I will cycle again today.
Not too shabby!
Yesterday was a great day in the land of Neurophthalmology. The rotation I’m doing this month is focused on eye problems that have origins in the brain. Patients who have had strokes and injured their visual cortex (part of the brain that processes images), a surprisingly large amount of patients with brain tumors pressing on nerves affecting the eye, inflammation of the nerves going to the eye, infection of the nerve in the eye, multiple sclerosis, other autoimmune issues, all that kind of stuff.
And it’s awesome! The physician I’m working with is kind of a big deal. She’s extremely well known throughout the country, and is one of the only remaining experts in her field. It’s such a hard field because each patient is so complicated. It takes a LONG time to work up each patient and there are no surgical treatments in neurophthalmology. Only seeing 8-9 patients a day, and never doing surgery = no money, so few people go into this field.
The retina folks down the hall see 80 patients a day. 80 PATIENTS A DAY!!! For one doctor. I’m not joking. And they do surgery. So their income is significantly higher than neurophthalmolgy.
Anyways, my point is that I’m enjoying it and learning a lot. And I LOVE not having to carry around a stethoscope 🙂
Now to the important parts of this post.
1.) Schedule Change… Meant To Be?
I made a very stupid mistake and got confused about my schedule. I guess I just wasn’t thinking because I never submitted a request for the special elective in oculoplastics I had intended to do next month. Now it’s too late to get in the request and I can’t take the elective.
What’s a girl to do? I thought about taking the month off and studying for Step 2 of my boards, but while scanning through the course catalogue I found one that interested me. It’s a public health/preventative medicine course with the department of health for Indiana. You pick a topic you are interested in, (for me, it would be diabetes, obesity, nutrition) and you research that topic as it applies to our population in Indiana. The entire rotation is just research, but you have access to all the Dept. of Health stuff! At the end of the month you make a presentation and report on what you found.
Doesn’t that sound cool!?!?! Plus, since it’s all research, I think I would have extra time to study for my boards and things like that.
I immediately emailed the lady in charge and I’m crossing my fingers I get in.
Obviously from my blog, you can see I have an interest in nutrition and health as it applies to medicine. This would be a great opportunity to explore those interests for a month! Maybe this is meant to be!
2.) Deciding What I Think About Plastic Chemicals/Toxic
Chemicals In The House
A week or two ago, I decided to stop using plastic tupperware and switch to glass. I keep reading semi-scary things about plastic BPA and all that stuff… so I figured why not just get rid of as much plastic as I can? Since then, I’ve been researching, trying to find some actual scientific data that’s not from a plastic company or a natural health organization (both sides are pretty skewed I think).
I’m still researching and I will let you know what I find out. So far, it looks as though there have been some questionable studies about BPA affecting kids more than adults, questions about fertility issues, life-time doses of these chemicals, etc. I haven’t found a definitive answer yet.

Yesterday I packed lunch and dinner and still had a few plastic pieces in there… but I’m slowly phasing them out 🙂
Hummus, carrots, a protein bar, watermelon, chicken tiki masala with quinoa and zucchini, and a chicken jerky snack.
