While I was in Evansville doing my family medicine rotation, I had a 1 hour commute each way. That means that 2 hours of my day were spent in the car. Yikes!! But even though I had 2 hours less, I still managed to fit in everything I normally do. I still blogged, still worked out 5-6 times a week, still packed my lunch every day and made my oatmeal every day.
How is this possible??? The more I started to think about it, the more it made me think of that concept where the bigger your purse is, you still manage to fill it up- know what I mean? It’s as if we are given a set amount of time in the day and we will fill it with the things we want to do. I didn’t do any less while I was on my family rotation… so where was all that extra time when I was in Indy with my 15 minute commute?
Here’s where it went:
- I still leave 1 hour early in the morning so that I can get to work early and study or chat with my residents/attendings
- I come home from the hospital and sit on the couch while I make dinner and end up watching 1 hour of TV
- I watch TV on the computer in the mornings while I get ready and sometimes I go slower because I want to see more of the show
- I snooze on my alarm more
So, even though technically I had more time in Indy than I did in Evansville, I did the same amount of things and just wasted the remaining time without even knowing it!!!
Imagine how much I could get done if I didn’t waste all that time!?!?!?
I find that the busier I am, the more productive I tend to be. When I’m not busy, I get LAZY… Big time. Luckily, this new rotation already seems like it’s going to keep me pretty busy. I was there from 8am-7:30pm yesterday!
First thing yesterday morning I knocked out a quick 3 miles on the treadmill while I blogged and got some work done. Then I got ready and made the best decision ever: I pulled out my super warm winter coat. I know It’s not even November yet but I don’t care. It’s freezing here! I tried to wear an October appropriate coat 2 days ago and was miserable all day. So I’m wearing my marshmallow coat and I don’t care what people think!!
I threw together a quick lunch of some roasted asparagus, sweet potatoes, and tuna mixed with mustard. Pretty good if you ask me!
From 3 to 5 we had a break in our experiments and so I rushed home to get in another quick run. I did some HIIT, got all nice and sweaty, and went back to school.
Unfortunately, I have not made it to the gym yet to do any weight lifting this week! I’m hoping today I will get out early so I can go get in some strength training.
Have a wonderful day!
Do you feel like you’re more productive when you’re busy? Or do you like having extra time?
